The South Beach Diet: Finding the Perfect Weight Loss Plan

Whenever any diet is started it is meant as a life change, it cannot be anything but a life change. If you truly want to lose weight, you need a program that will encourage you to keep the weight off after you have reached your weight loss goal. This can be done in several ways. You could have a great support system that continuously tells you how great you look. The South Beach Diet is such a plan.

The South Beach Diet was created by Dr. Arthur Agaston because he saw that the dieting that his patients performed had no long term success. He was versed in the science of nutrition and realized that complex carbohydrates and low fats alone would not help a person maintain weight loss. We all get cravings for certain foods. The trick is to change your mind set by allowing foods that are healthy to replace those which are not. Carbohydrates must be of the right type. The diet consists of three phases of weight loss. The first phase is, necessarily, the most restrictive. In this phase (lasting about two weeks) you are not allowed to have any carbohydrates. This gives your body time to adjust to not having the simple carbs that it has been enjoying, and also helps balance blood glucose levels. The second piece allows certain carbohydrates back into the diet such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. The third phase begins the maintenance. This is where the South Beach Diet life style begins. When this phase is reached you are used to the type of eating that will healthily last you for the rest of your life.
